Simon Davenport will be presenting a new body of work for his exhibition at The Toolshed. Through the mediums of sculpture, film and print, Davenport’s practice continues to explore the idea of ‘virgin thought’ and transcendence when encountered with the unbound or intangible.
In excerpts from Davenports’ new film, ‘Martin House Martin’ we watch over the experiences of the protagonist, Martin as he navigates the art world, its surroundings and his unexplained position at ‘COOL PIZZA INC’.
In addition to the film, the space will be occupied by robotic sculpture, a vinyl banner, a print and special edition bottles of a beverage to be served for the preview, all distinct as works but invariably capitalising from the film. The audience gets a total experience.
Simon’s practice has a feeling of longevity to it; a nostalgia not yet experienced. A future observation of the past, that past being our present day. It doesn’t necessarily answer questions but rather ponders on the cusp of the alienness of things and how we may experience them, as a 'virgin feeling'. A reaction to looking for a relational context isn’t necessary key to when being first confronted with Davenports works. His potentially inexplicable decisions and propositions, arouses thought on a desire to discover a beauty not penetrable in terms of the orders of society, relationships and politics. Tapping into contemporary culture and the newness, unbeknown, that what may become a norm, in Simon’s dissecting and retranslation of objects and characters, into ephemeral motifs, through the nuances of colour, form and placement, we discover the romance of lifestyle.
